Slip Ring Cross-Reference: Finding a Replacement for Your Current Model

Most replacement enquiries start the same way: a machine is in service, the original slip ring is obsolete, expensive or on a long lead time, and the buyer needs to know whether an alternative exists. This page explains how we match a replacement, what we can cover, and what to send so the answer comes back in a day rather than a month.

How a replacement is actually matched

A slip ring is not matched by part number — part numbers are internal to each manufacturer. It is matched by five physical parameters, in this order:

  1. Bore (inner diameter) — the shaft it has to sit on. This is a hard constraint.
  2. Outer diameter and axial length — the space available in the housing.
  3. Circuit count and split — how many power, signal and data channels.
  4. Current per channel and voltage — including any paralleled rings.
  5. Speed, duty cycle and environment — rpm, IP rating, temperature, contamination.

When those five match within tolerance, the replacement works. When one of them is outside our standard range, it becomes a custom build — which is normal for this industry, and is what most of our projects are.

What we can cover

GUREN builds six families, which together cover the large majority of industrial replacement cases outside military-grade applications:

Application type Our family Typical range
Through-bore, shaft passes through GK series 12.7–50 mm bore, 6–36 circuits, 5–20 A per ring, 20–80 million revolutions
Compact capsule WX series 4–12 circuits, 5–10 A, 0.5–2 million revolutions
Pancake / disc Custom design Built to drawing; large diameter, thin axial height
Very high current, single channel A / W mercury series 25–450 A at 400 V, 400–1,800 rpm
Optical data channels GX fiber optic 2–31 channels, single and multi-mode, up to 100 million revolutions
Fluid plus electrical in one joint Q gas & gas-electric Air / vacuum / coolant plus electrical channels

The one area we do not serve is military-grade qualification work. Everything else — industrial, medical-adjacent, marine, wind, automation, robotics — is within scope.

What most replacements need that the original did not

Machines rarely fail for the reason the original slip ring was specified for. Three additions come up repeatedly in replacement work:

  • Higher IP rating — the original IP51 was fine on paper, but the enclosure collects condensation. IP65 is the usual upgrade.
  • More life — the original was a 2-million-revolution capsule in a machine that runs continuously. A through-bore unit at 20–80 million revolutions changes the maintenance interval by an order of magnitude.
  • Separated signal channels — the original mixed encoder wiring with power. Re-laying the channels at one end and separating the bundles usually fixes long-standing noise problems.

How to send a replacement enquiry

Send the following and an equivalent can usually be confirmed within one working day:

  1. Photo of the existing unit, especially any label with a part number
  2. Shaft diameter and available space (or the original datasheet if you have it)
  3. Channel list: number of power, signal and data channels, current per channel
  4. Operating speed and duty cycle
  5. Environment: indoor/outdoor, washdown, temperature, contamination

If some of those are unknown, send what you have — a photo and the shaft size often carry enough information to propose two or three candidate models.

A note on part numbers and brands

Slip rings are supplied by many manufacturers, including companies such as Moog, Moflon and JINPAT, each with their own numbering. We do not hold or publish other manufacturers’ catalogues, and we are not affiliated with any of them. What we can do is evaluate a specific unit against our families and tell you, honestly, whether we can match it and where the limits are.

All trademarks mentioned belong to their respective owners. GUREN is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or an authorised agent of any other slip ring manufacturer.

To start a cross-reference check, send your part number and photos or browse the product families.
