Slip Rings for Packaging Machinery

Carousel fillers, labelers and rotary form-fill-seal machines run thousands of cycles a day. The slip ring is the part that decides whether sensors and heaters on the rotating head keep working — or become a weekly maintenance item.

Specifications

Parameter Value Notes
Typical bore 12.7 mm or 25.4 mm Compact heads use the smaller frame
Circuit count 6 / 12 / 18 / 24 / 36 Sensors, heaters, valve signals, encoder feedback
Current per ring 5 A / 10 A Heater circuits often need one ring per heater zone
Voltage 440 V Most packaging lines run 220-240 V; 440 V gives headroom
Rotation speed Up to 250 rpm Indexing vs continuous rotation changes wear profile
Life expectancy 20 / 50 / 80 million revolutions High-cycle lines benefit from the top tier
Operating temperature −30 to +80 °C Near sealing jaws, local heat matters
Protection class IP51 / IP65 IP65 for washdown zones in food packaging
Contact material Six-element alloy wire, gold plated Low noise for sensor and encoder circuits

Common packaging applications

  • Rotary fillers and cappers — valve signals, level sensors and heater power on the carousel
  • Labelers — servo and encoder signals on the rotating applicator head
  • Form-fill-seal machines — jaw heater power and film tension feedback
  • Cartoners and case packers — controls on the rotating indexing head
  • Inspection turntables — camera and lighting power on a continuously rotating table

Why packaging machines are hard on slip rings

A packaging line may index 60 times a minute, eight hours a day. That is not high speed, but it is a very high number of small movements — and the failure mode is different from a slow, continuous rotation:

  • Fretting at the contacts — small oscillating movements wear through the plating faster than steady rotation. Gold plating and stable contact pressure matter more than a thick ring.
  • Heater current in the same housing as sensor signals — a 2 kW jaw heater next to a 24 V sensor line needs internal separation. Tell us both, not just the total circuit count.
  • Washdown zones — food and pharma packaging lines get hosed down. IP65 is the usual answer; IP51 is fine for dry areas only.
Practical tip: count heater zones and sensor lines separately. A machine that looks like “12 circuits” is often 8 signal + 4 heater, and mixing them without telling us produces noise problems that are hard to diagnose later.

How to specify in one message

  1. Head type — continuous rotation or indexing, and the cycle rate per minute.
  2. Circuit split — how many power/heater rings, how many signal rings, any encoder or Ethernet.
  3. Environment — dry, washdown, or dust; temperature near the jaws.
  4. Mounting — shaft diameter, available OD and lead exit direction.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put 8 heater circuits and 12 sensors in one unit?

Yes, with internal separation between power and signal groups. Send the split (8 heater at what current, 12 sensor at what voltage) and we will confirm the layout and any shielding needed.

Is IP65 enough for a washdown line?

IP65 handles low-pressure jets and dust. For high-pressure washdown or chemical cleaning, tell us the conditions — IP68 is available and may be the safer choice.

Do I need the 80-million-revolution tier?

For a multi-shift line indexing dozens of times a minute, yes. For a single-shift machine with lower cycle counts, the 20 or 50 million tier is usually enough.

What about the encoder signal quality?

Use a dedicated signal ring group with gold-plated contacts and keep it physically separated from heater circuits. Specify the encoder type and pulse rate so we can confirm.
